Hi everyone! Today we are getting real. Today I want to share something I have struggled with and how God has set me free from the chains bounding me. As you can tell by the title of this post we are going to be doing a little workout with Jesus! Don’t worry you won’t run out of breath during this workout!
One of the things I always try to incorporate into my daily routine is a workout or some type of physical activity. I love being active and always try my best to stay in shape! Normally my motivation for working out is because it feels great on my body, I love breaking a sweat, and it’s just fun for me! Somewhere along the line, Satan started feeding me with lies. Lies related to my self-image. Because of those lies, my motivation to workout was driven my self-image rather than enjoyment. As quickly as that I became a slave to the gym. I no longer went because I wanted to, I went because I felt like I HAD to. In order to be accepted and feel confident in my beauty I had to workout. #DANGERZONE! The enjoyment was stipped away and I was only focusing on an unachievable goal. It started taking control of my life and my priorities. Until I had finally had enough. I wanted to be set free. I no longer wanted to be a slave. I was done believing the lies Satan was feeding me with. I wanted to be set free. I finally remembered (do you ever just want to smack yourself for even forgetting?) the ONLY place I would find that freedom & joy is through our savior Jesus Christ. Man, the minute I call out to him and surrender all my baggage, he takes it away and fills my heart with peace. If you are in a season of your life where you feel like you are chained down by lies, anxiety, fear, or just the weight of the world, surrender it. Call out to God and give it all up. He will take it and that is when the healing begins.
Now I’m sure you’re wondering where any sort of “cardio with Jesus” fits into all of this. When I surrendered the lies I was believing God revealed 1 Timothy 4:8 to me. “For physical training is of some value, but training for godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” This verse changes my perspective. I have gotten too caught up “working out” my body which is only temporary when I should be “working out” and “training” my heart which is eternal. It is so easy to get stuck living with the world…but by living with the world we will find no freedom, comfort, or peace. We will find those things by walking closely with Jesus. SO this verse allowed me to draw my attention to God rather than to the gym. God gave me the idea of a spiritual workout (MUCH more beneficial) rather than a physical one. No, God doesn’t want you to stop getting exercise and breaking a good sweat, but he does want us to prioritize “training for godliness” like 1 Timothy 4:8 says. Our bodies are going to get wrinkly and flabby no matter what we do. Psalm 73:26 says, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” The strength God gives our hearts is what will last forever and ever.
So with the help of God and some of my friends we came up with a little workout for your walk with Jesus. Walking with the Lord is a daily workout! These are the some of things I enjoy doing every single day to give myself a good workout for what really matters, my relationship with Jesus.
Wake up & PRAY: The minute I open my eyes in the morning I pray. It’s easy to forget sometimes and fall back asleep…But after just a couple mornings it will become a habit! Then it will become second nature to talk to God the minute you open your eyes every single day.
Surrender Yourself & Your Day: When I first talk to God in the morning I simply thank for giving me another day as well as surrender myself to him. I just give up the control I try to have on my life and give it all to him. (Even though he already has all the control…I sometimes try to fight him for it) I ask God to live through me and give me opportunities throughout the day to bring him glory.
Be still & Listen: Life is busy and it’s so easy for the precious quiet moments with God to get skipped. Every morning I try to wake up a little bit earlier to carve out some quiet time with God. In these moments I ask him to allow me to listen to what He is telling me. Sometimes it’s hard to hear God’s voice with so many distractions.
Praying on your knees: My friend told me he has been in the habit of praying on his knees every morning. He said it cut out all distractions and allowed him to fully focus on God. I decided to give it a try. As I pray on my knees it just puts me at a place of humility. I feel like I am at the feet of Jesus. It reminds me of how small I am and how God is, well… God! I feel very close to him. I definitely recommend giving it a try.
Get in the Word: I remember going through times where I just wanted to know God and feel close to him, but I just didn’t know how. People in my life guided me to get in the word! I mean…it’s Gods word. He literally breathed it into our hands. The Bible reveals who God is, how much he loves us, how we should live, and more…ugh it’s just beautiful.
Start a Book of the Bible: As beautiful as the Bible is, it can be intimidating. I mean where the heck do I start?! Wait, is this a poetry book? Um…geneology? Uhh…who the heck is Obadiah and why is there a book named after him? I have had all of those thoughts before. My best advice is to start small. Pick a book, and simply read a chapter every day. The book of James would be a great place to start. It’s a short book and has so many things to say about living like Jesus. It’s one of my favorites!
Make “Jesus Time” part of your Daily Routine: Whether that is in the morning, or in the evening, make it a priority to spend time with God. My boyfriend said to me the other day, “Isn’t it crazy to think that we take only a little bit of time out of our day to sit down with God, but God is sitting down next to us every second of every day?” That makes me feel a little guilty. God is constantly with us and wants to spend time with us. He is always available. In order to grow closer to God and form a stronger relationship with him, we must spend time with him. Whether that is 5 minutes a day or an hour! Give God your time…because when you think about it “our time” isn’t actually ours. It’s the time he is giving us. Let’s use it!
I hope you enjoyed this little workout. If you are feeling chained like I was, I hope that you try some of these things and can discover the freedom God is waiting to give you!
